The Commission has been very effective over the past three years in securing a level of political consensus to the values underpinning the law reform enterprise. An important assumption in our work is that this attitude and the climate for law reform remains favourable. We believe that there is a widespread recognition of the value of the Commission as an independent Crown entity with its unique mandate to take a view of the whole of the statute book, its high quality legal expertise and its ability to undertake research and analysis removed from the day to day operational pressures that arise as competing priorities for core departments, such as the Ministry of Justice, which also provides law reform advice.
